Scottish Bakers scoop top award

Scottish Bakers, the association that supports and promotes the interests of Scottish Bakers across the country, won a top award on Tuesday evening (15 December 2015) at the UK Association Awards for the Scottish Bakers Annual Conference and Awards 2015. Scooping the prestigious CONFERENCE DEVELOPMENT category and bringing the prize home to Scotland, Chief Executive Alan Clarke was jubilant stating "this is an absolutely amazing achievement. A large part of our work at Scottish Bakers goes into recognising the excellence of our members through Scottish Baker of the Year and the World Scotch Pie Championships to name just two initiatives but to have our own work recognised by our peers is simply incredible."


Scotland’s top crust butchers and bakers were on tenter-hooks as their best products were delivered into the hands of the judges of the 17th World Scotch Pie Championships. Judging took place at Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline on Wednesday 11th November 2015 and the winners – which will remain a closely guarded secret until Wednesday 13 January 2016 - have been chosen. This year’s competition has seen nearly 100 butchers and bakers from all over Scotland deliver more than 500 of their best their pies, savouries and bridies to the Carnegie Conference Centre where they have battled it out for pie supremacy.

Showcasing Scotland is taking place at Gleneagles Hotel from the 6-9 October 2015 and members of our Scottish Bakers Export Group are in attendance, ready to meet and do business with a wide range of UK and International Buyers. Aulds Delicious Desserts, Bells Food Group, Brownings The Bakers, Maclean’s Highland Bakery, McGhee’s Family Bakers and Lightbody Ventures have packed their diaries with 1-1 meetings with UK and International Buyers with the aim of showcasing their products, establishing new contacts and doing business.


It is with great sadness that were informed this week of the death of David T Bell, owner of Bells Food Group and master baker. David passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. Our sincere condolences go to his wife and family. 


The Scotch Pie Club has announced the dates for the 17th World Scotch Pie Championship and the timing could not be better. With a nip in the air, customers will be looking for warming flavour-filled treats and traditional savoury snacks and the ever-popular Scotch Pie more than fits the bill. In addition to Scotch pies, bakers and butchers are invited to enter their best sausage rolls, bridies, speciality savouries and Scottish football pies as well as something sweet in the form Apple Pies.


Zero Waste Scotland is running a conference on the 7-8th of October entitled “Feeding the planet, feeding Scotland's economy”.  The conference will feature keynote addresses from: Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs - The Scottish Government; and Tristram Stuart, Food Waste Campaigner and Writer.


It is with great sadness that SAMB Past President (1973-74) Ian Terris passed away peacefully on Monday 21st September 2015, The funeral service will take place on Monday 28th September 2015 at 11.30am at Limekilns Parish Church, followed by a private burial and thereafter at Garvock House Hotel.


Scottish Bakers would like to congratulate Scottish baker George Ross, of JG Ross (Bakers) Ltd, who last night (Wednesday 9 September) received the Baking Industry Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Baking Industry. The awards ceremony, organised by British Baker and William Reed Business Media, was hosted by the glamorous Claudia Winkleman and took place at the fabulous London Hilton, Park Lane.
